Last night (June 21, 2010) the the Northwest One Community Advisory Committee held their quarterly meeting at Mt. Airy Baptist Church. The meeting included an update from William C. Smith & Co and The Warrenton Group on 2 M Street (also known as Northwest One Site 2). William C. Smith & Co is working on finalizing construction documents to submit for permit as well and working to obtain financing. 2M Street will include 221 market rate units and 93 affordable units (59 of which will be for former Temple Courts residents). The goal is for construction on the 314-unit 12 story mixed income building to begin late first quarter/early 2nd quarter 2011.
Other topics at the meeting included updates from the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) on the Walker Jones School Campus and the Human Capital efforts for the Northwest One area. Tia Gilbert (DMPED) updated the group on the efforts of Housing Opportunities Unlimited (HOU) as well as the recent career clubs HOU in conjunction with William C. Smith & Co hosted at William C. Smith Co offices. The career club has resulted in the hiring of one former Temple Courts resident by William C. Smith & Co as a leasing consultant at the Village of Parklands property in southeast, Washington, D.C.
In addition, representatives from The Severna project and Sursum Corda provided updates to the group. The Severna is expected to begin construction in July with a 15-month construction schedule.

18th Annual William C. Smith + Co. Summer Youth Employment Program Kick-off
18th Annual William C. Smith + Co. Summer Youth Employment Program Kick-off
Friday, June 25 – 10:00 am
THEARC Theater – 1901 Mississippi Avenue SE
This summer, 42 teens will participate in the William C. Smith + Co. summer youth employment program and join the ranks of nearly 900 youngsters who have participated over the last 18 years. Over the past two decades, our company has enhanced and fine tuned the program with input from the youth employees and company volunteers, resulting in an experience that is about much more than a paycheck.
In addition to receiving job training, youth employees will take part in weekly workshops focusing on a variety of topics – interpersonal skills, nutrition, communication, violence, and financial literacy – conducted by experts in their fields. In addition, they will have the opportunity to participate in a basketball tournament and take part in a college campus visit.
We hope your schedule will permit you to come out and support this year’s group of teens as they embark on this journey – and to acknowledge the William C. Smith + Co. supervisors who volunteer their time to teach and mentor program participants.
